Henry Rose
A solid, well constructed GRP Golden Hind 31 from 1981. A very versatile, sloop rigged, triple keeler which is ideal for shallower waters, having only a 1.2m draft, yet these boats have gained an enviable reputation for long distance, blue water cruising. In fact, many of these boats have circumnavigated and in the late 70s/ 80s had completed more transatlantic crossing than any other production boat.
This boat has sailed English waters, Irish, Scottish West Coast and Islands and then in 2019 was sailed to Spain.
She is now moored in the very affordable and pleasant Puerto Almerimar marina in Almeria province Southern Spain.
An ideal base for exploring the Balearic islands and the rest of the Mediterranean, and also well situated for sailing to the entry points for the French canal system.
This particular model was custom built to a much higher specification than was normal and although in good general condition does require a few upgrades including a new headsail furling system and some halyards cleaned or renewed and some general tlc..
The hull was stripped back with epoxy barrier coats applied before repainting in 2021 and coachroof repainted with Kiwi Grip in 2022.
The hull was also antifouled in 2023.
The sails are from Hood and are serviceable although the genoa requires a sacrificial strip.
On deck, the boat comes with a very useful removable forestay, which makes her a 'slutter', and a 15kg CRQ anchor and 60m of chain.
Inside the boat there is a wealth of traditional teak and mahogany and a lovely teak and holly sole.
The interior hull sides and coach roof have 5cm insulation behind ash-faced ply, so she is a very comfortable and dry boat with minimal condensation.
There are two long salon berths that are custom-made in Connolly leather with huge storage lockers below (currently filled with spares, paints, etc). The good-sized V berth has an inset to make a double bed. The mattress was replaced and covered in 2021.
There is a good-sized galley with 2-burner stove and oven, a large coolbox, large top-loading dry storage box and sufficient cupboards and drawers for extended cruising. The current owners spent 4.5 months aboard and were very comfortable.
There is pressurized hot/cold water, in heads and galley, an electric heater below the V berth and an attractive, very effective gas heater in the salon.
The hot water is heated by a fabulous gas water heater situated in the heads.
The heater has never failed since it's installation in 1981!
There is a VHF radio with DSC, GPS, a radio with two speakers in the salon and navtext (requiring a new aerial).
On deck there are wind speed/direction and depth meters and a Plastimo compass and depth meter.
All through hulls are Blakes bronze.
There is a manual bilge pump in the cockpit and a new electric bilge pump awaiting installation.
All in all, this is a lot of boat for the money and the areas requiring updating and tidying are reflected in the price.
The owner is sadly and reluctantly forced to sell due to ongoing health issues which prevent him from maintaining and upgrading this much loved boat to the standard she deserves.
